An ancient print of the legendary Chinese Tree of Life, yielding its eternal life fruit every 2000 years:

The history of feng shui covers about 4000 years before the invention of the magnetic compass. It originated in Chinese astronomy. Some current techniques can be traced to anchient China.

Historically, feng shui was widely used to orient buildings - often spiritually significant structures such as tombs, but also dwellings and other structures - in an auspicious manner. Depending on the particular style of feng shui being used, an auspicious site could be determined by reference to local features such as bodies of water, stars, or a compass.

What is Feng Shui? In short, it is a cosmic interaction between nature elements and humans, and between humans, animals, plants, objects, rooms, buildings and other entities. It is used primarily to analyze, create, resolve issues and improve life in matters concerning;

  • Exterior and interior of homes and buildings
  • Garden and outdoor environments for pleasant living
  • Personal character and career trend analysis and planning
  • Environmental health and living comfort at home and in the office
  • Personal health and weakness analysis to determine and administer suitable cures.

It is also used for character, health and life-trend analysis and helps to determine a person's carrer path and talents to be best used accordingly.

Qi (roughly pronounced as the sound 'chee' in English) is a movable positive or negative life force which plays an essential role in feng shui. In feng shui as in Chinese martial arts, it refers to 'natural energy flow', in the sense of 'life force' or élan vital. A traditional explanation of qi as it relates to feng shui would include the orientation of a structure, its age, and its interaction with the surrounding environment including the local microclimates, the slope of the land, vegetation, soil quality, interior design, furniture placement around the house and life quality.

Two diagrams known as bagua (or pa kua) loom large in feng shui, and both predate their mentions in the YijingI Ching). The Lo (River) Chart (Luoshu, or Later Heaven Sequence) was developed first.

The Luoshu and the River Chart (Hetu, or Early Heaven Sequence) are linked to astronomical events of the sixth millennium BCE, and with the Turtle Calendar from the time of Yao, The Turtle Calendar of Yao (found in the Yaodian section of the Shangshu or Book of Documents) dates to 2300 BCE, plus or minus 250 years.

The ancient Chinese calendar, in conjunction with the square on which contain 'magic numbers'. The skilful interpretation and manipulation of these numbers helps to analyze personal qualities and plot a career and health path.

With on exception, when you add together in any one straight line the numbers, they equal 12 = the twelve star signs of the zodiac and 12 tribes of Israel.

In Yaodian, the cardinal directions are determined by the marker-stars of the mega-constellations known as the Four Celestial Animals, colours, nature elements, life factors and so forth:

East
The Green Dragon (Spring equinox)—Niao (Bird), α Hydrae
South
The Red Phoenix (Summer solstice)—Huo (Fire), α Scorpionis
West
The White Tiger (Autumn equinox)—Xu (Emptiness, Void), α Aquarii, β Aquarii
North
The Dark Turtle (Winter solstice)—Mao (Hair), η Tauri (the Pleiades)

The diagrams are also linked with the sifang (four directions) method of intuitive meditation used during the Shang dynasty. The sifang is much older, however. It was used at Niuheliang, and figured large in Hongshan culture's astronomy. And it is this area of China that is linked to Huangdi, the Yellow Emperor, who allegedly invented the south-pointing spoon (compass?).

Our lives may change for the better with the skilful application of Feng Shui.
